Our Mission

As a centre of excellence in the eye care service in Sri Lanka, this institute provides adequate quality services to satisfy patients through maximum tertiary level eye care with advance technology and with kindness of well trained staff and well maintain quality. It also gives necessary training and guidance for all categories of staff in the eye care service in Sri Lanka. We Support and conduct community eye care programs also in Sri Lanka.

Eye Hospital has a long history in the health care of Sri Lanka. This is the tertiary care hospital with the centre of excellence which was established in 1905. It gives services to all categories of all eye related problems either medically or surgically. Patients are referred from all parts of the island for the specialized management.
The practice of Ophthalmology involves the promotion of eye health, preservation of sight provocation of blindness, restoration of vision, enhancement of abnormal vision and enhancement of fractional vision .The National Eye Hospital of Colombo provide the above mentioned service to the entire nation since the inception 1962 from the current premises.
Receiving the certificate of Merit at the Annual Health Excellence Award – 2010, is one of the achievements to prove our services in eye care. It is because of the hard work of the entire staff of the hospital for this achievement. Establishment of the Eye Bank at the hospital premises itself is one of the mile stone achieved in this era to provide corneal tissue for the corneal transplantation. Providing the spectacles for the elders and the school children from the hospital itself note the completeness of services to the patients. We started provide free intra ocular lens to the needy people with the help of donors.
The Out Patient Department of the eye hospital also works round the clock to give maximum service to the nation with extension of OPD hours. This institution OPD is running till 8 pm to see all the routine eye problem while the casualty patients are seen for 24 hours. The rehabilitation of the eye care is given through the Low Vision Clinic which gives maximum services to make use the remaining residual vision to live and look after them. This institution is under the administration of a director and a deputy director with eight consultant ophthalmologist, one vitro retinal surgeon one pathologist, two anesthetists, one consultant resident physician and about hundred medical officers. There are special clinics for retinal patients, diabetic, glaucoma, and post operative patients. Two retinal units are functioning under the supervision of two Consultant Ophthalmologists. There are team of ophthalmic technologist and orthopist handling the paramedical service such as refraction and orthoptic assessment. Medical laboratory technicians, pharmacist and cardiographers also give their service to the ophthalmic field in the management. The staff of the hospital works with the hearts to make this institution as the best eye care producer in the South Asia.

2. To develop uptodate training programs for each category of health staff suitable for local and international level in eye care.

4. To sustain as a centre of excellence in eye care in Sri Lanka.
5. To sustain equality for service recipient regardless their income or status.

Our Services
Out Patient Department

National Eye Hospital has an Out Patient Department (OPD) which is open from 8.00am to 8.00pm daily, except on Sundays and public holidays.(On Saturdays OPD is open from 8.00am to 12.00 noon. But OPD tickets are issued only till 10.00am). When a new patient comes to the OPD, he/she should be first visited to room number 10. There an OPD ticket will be issued to that patient and he/she will be sent to room number 13 to check the vision. Once it is done the patient will be sent to the waiting area allocated to the OPD till his/her number is called. This waiting area is located in front of the three rooms where OPD doctors treating patients. These three rooms are room number 4B, 5 and 11. The room number to which each patient should visit is mentioned in the OPD ticket.

Emergency department

Emergency department of the National Eye Hospital is open for 24 hours a day for 7 days. Casualty units have been divided as shown below.

Tuesday – Dr. (Mrs) Mangala Gamage
Wednesday – Dr. Binara Amarasinghe
Thursday – Dr. (Mrs) Manel Pasquel
Friday – Dr. H. Charith N. Fonseka
Running casualty – Dr. (Ms) Vasuki Gurusamy & Dr. (Ms) A L Dharmarathna

This arrangement will be changed when consultants are covering up casualty admissions in weekends. Patients coming to take treatment from the Emergency department of the National Eye Hospital should go to room number 23. All activates related to patients will be done there. If a patient needs further opinion on treatment he/ she will be admitted to the ward of the corresponding consultant for further management.
